ThumbnailThis is another truly wonderful horn. It's Paxman's famous, full double descant horn in Bb/A(+)/F alto. This is the later model which employs switchable leadpipes for each side of the instrument, but also a switchable piece of bell taper which is provided for the F alto horn. Richard Merewether's fiendishly clever design incorporates these sophisticated changes automatically as you play. It's for this reason that there is a change valve in the bell spout, located above the left hand playing position. When you operate the change valve to move onto the F alto horn, this valve cuts out a piece of the Bb horn's bell taper and replaces it with a more acoustically correct, smaller piece of bell taper designed specially for the F alto horn. The change valve also operates two different continuation leadpipe pieces - one for each side of the horn - which are joined, via the change valve, onto the common piece of initial leadpipe taper. The purpose is so that you are using the most theoretically (and practically) correct lengths and tapers of leadpipe at all times, whatever side of the horn you are using. It's a design masterpiece! And - needless to say - it plays just superbly.

This example is in unlacquered yellow brass with a detachable, large bell. So it makes a dark, warm, noble sound. The general condition is good - not excellent (it does have the odd, slight blemish) - but the playing condition is first class. The horn comes in black, flat, hard Paxman case, also in good condition.
