This is an inexpensive horn for lovers of that BIG, 'Hollywood' sound. It's got an extra-large bell and so it sounds exactly like a Conn 8D, Yamaha 668, Holton 179 or Paxman New World.
It's in almost as-new condition and it's a delight to play...

Look at this, ladies and gentlemen! This is Holton's famous MerkerMatic in lacquered gold brass and nickel-silver with a detachable bell. Truly, this is an exquisite instrument. Designed for Holton by the great Ethel Merker, these wonderful instruments are rarely seen in this lovely and sonorous combination of metals.
The lacquer on this horn is perfect, as is the rest of the horn - literally indistinguishable from brand new...
These fine horns are made in the Kruspe style wrap, but have medium-large bells. So they are beautifully free-blowing with long, flowing curves and they produce a warm, centred sound not unlike many Geyer style horns.
This is a beautiful, sophisticated instrument for a discerning player.

This is Yamaha's version of the Geyer style double horn: with a medium bell and the change valve after the main valve block in the airflow travel, these horns produce a bright, 'perky,' neat kind of sound and are very popular with players who follow the famous Geyer style horns but want something comparatively inexpensive.
They're very easy to play - well slotted, free-blowing and with excellent intonation - and they do make excellent first professional quality doubles.
This one is in great condition - in lacquered yellow brass and with a detachable bell and high quality Yamaha flat, hard case - and plays really very nicely. There are a couple of minor blemishes - it's a used horn, after all - but nothing which is at all troubling.
A nice, easy to play first professional quality double.

or phone +44 (0)1452 536 264 for further information These very rare horns are simply awesome. This is an Auguste Knopf, and it's in almost as-new condition. There's some missing lacquer where an adjustable pinky hook has been fitted. Apart from this, the lacquer is intact. The horn plays beautifully - as you'd expect - and has a stopping valve to render hand-stopping non-transposing on the Bb horn.
This beautiful and sought-after instrument is made from gold brass (Wow!) and has a screw bell. It comes in a new(ish) fixed bell case in good condition, although a new screw bell case can be supplied at cost.
These don't come along every day, gentlemen: snap it up quickly before someone else does!

Please read our description of Ref 1556 - this horn is exactly the same, but a little tatty looking. However, the tattiness is cosmetic only: just scratched and missing lacquer and we can remove the lacquer remnants FOC upon request. The horn plays absolutely superbly and comes with our usual guarantee and recon package.
And it ain't fortunes...

This is a really nice, inexpensive horn. It's a Kruspe wrap horn but with a medium bell and it is a joy to play. There are players who favour one wrap or the other - Kruspe or Geyer - and generally Kruspe wrap horns have extra-large bells and Geyer wrap horns have medium bells. Of course, Paxman have demonstrated with spectacular effect that any bell size will work perfectly on a Geyer wrap horn; the obverse is also true and here's a horn that proves it.
In lacquered nickel-silver (around 90%+ intact) and with a fixed bell, this is a lovely, free-blowing full F/Bb double horn in not far short of as-new condition. It comes in a black hard case which is nothing to write home about but perfectly okay.

or phone +44 (0)1452 536 264 for further information This is a really nice horn. The workmanship is awesome and it plays superbly. These early Hoyers are 100% professional quality horns and every bit as good as many a Paxman or Alexander. This particular horn has a lovely, warm sound, very fluid legato facility, an excellent high range and a fat, meaty low register. All mechanical action and fixed bell, made in unlacquered yellow brass. And it doesn't cost a fortune...

Here's a rarity: a Hoyer Wagner tuba in F in utterly superb condition. This beautiful and rare instrument is made in lacquered gold brass, with the lacquer 100% intact.
It has 4 rotary valves - the 4th dropping the instrument to C (so a perfect 4th lower) - and comes in a hard, black case which is also in excellent condition. Like many Wagner tubas, I suppose, this lovely instrument hasn't been used very much at all, which explains its fantastic condition. Of course, it plays like new...

Holton H200 full double descant horn in Bb/A(+)/F alt
The great Barry Tuckwell used one of these throughout his career.
This instrument is a (cheeky) almost-copy of Paxman’s wonderful, industry standard descant, the pre-85 Model 40, designed by Paxman's famous late, great Dick Merewether. These wonderful horns are used the world over by amateurs and top professionals alike and the Holton version is a much cheaper, and very nearly as good, alternative. This particular horn is literally in as-new condition and plays beautifully.

This is an unusual instrument to come across on the used market - a Monnig single Bb and A(+) with a detachable F/A(+) extension. It's in unlacquered yellow brass with a fixed bell and comes in a hard, shaped case. Both horn and case are in excellent condition.
Playing-wise, this horn is a joy: the bell is large - which one rarely comes across on a single Bb horn - and so the horn makes a warm, mellow sound; the valves are tight (so the high register is great) and the instrument responds very quickly, so one can whizz around on it easily. It's got a lovely legato facility and plays really very well indeed throughout all registers.

This is an E series Elkhart-manufactured Conn 8D with a screw bell.
It's an old horn - obviously - and so it's rather tatty, like most Elkhart 8Ds nowadays, and has a few patches and blemishes. But doesn't it ever play well! The valves are airtight (as airtight as they ever are on any Conn) and they move quickly, smoothly and silently; all the slides move freely and the screw rings are fine.
All in all this is yet another Elkhart 8D which shows you the second you blow it why people go to such lengths to get these older 8Ds - they are so utterly lovely to play and they sound just gorgeous. Listen to any Hollywood blockbuster movie...

Yamaha Custom 667V - Geyer style full F/Bb double - AWESOME! |
|
|
|
Many players actually prefer these to the Geyer originals of which they're copies; many players also prefer them to the super-high-quality Geyer copies, like the Lewis, of which one hears so much.
And when you play one, it's easy to see why: they have super-excellent high ranges, they're free-blowing across all registers, they make an exciting, yet 'pert' sound (exactly the 'Chicago' sound), and they all but play themselves. Taking all this into account, it's surprising more people don't play them, particularly when you consider what excellent value for money they are.
This specimen is in excellent condition, and plays like new. It's fantastic. 'Nuff said!

This is one of the post-92 Hoyers which one hears so much about. (I've written extensively about the pre-92 Hoyers elsewhere on this site.) And I must say, it's a really lovely horn and very, very like an Engelbert Schmid to play and to look at. It's very lightweight, in the classic Geyer wrap, and it does play beautifully. Although its high register obviously isn't quite as good as the Schmid which the horn so resembles, it is, nevertheless, extremely good. Together with its other playing attributes - it's free-blowing and responsive, centred and flexible and makes a bright, perky 'Chicago' sound - this makes an excellent choice for a talented improver or a serious amateur.

or phone +44 (0)1452 536 264 for further information Here is another of these wonderful pre-92 Hoyers that I'm always going on about. They must be the best value-for-money professional quality horns available.
This one is in unlacquered yellow brass with a fixed bell; it's in excellent condition - although it looks a little tarnished in the pic (but we haven't chemically cleaned it yet) - and it's really nice to play. It's lightweight - obviously, being a comp - and it's free-blowing, even and responsive. It's got a slightly larger than medium bell, so it makes a nice, warm, mellow sound.
This would be an ideal horn for a gifted amateur or a serious improver of any age; but particularly suited to younger players because of its weight.
It comes with our usual 3-year guarantee and recon package. This is a nice horn, mums and dads...!

This is a fine-playing full F/Bb double in lacquered yellow brass (virtually 100% intact) and having a screw bell. The bell size is a medium-large, so it makes a bright, yet warm, sound. These horns are really sturdily built - so it is a little heavier than average - but, that said, the excellent build quality more than makes up for this.
It comes in a flat, black case which is also in excellent condition.
